Stock Market Stumbles Post-Christmas as Investors Eye Jobs Data

U.S. stock futures fell Thursday as trading resumed after the Christmas holiday, with Wall Street bracing for the release of weekly jobless claims data. Futures tied to the S&P 500 and Nasdaq declined by 0.3%, while Dow Jones Industrial Average futures dropped 0.4%. The market's struggle to extend the "Santa Claus rally" saw major indexes like the S&P 500 and Nasdaq nearing record highs after recovering from a Fed-fueled dip last week. Investors are now keenly awaiting the jobless claims report, which has taken on greater significance in the absence of other economic data this week.

Emergency Crews Recover Bodies in Gaza City Amid Ongoing Negotiations in Egypt

In the heart-wrenching aftermath of a two-week offensive, emergency crews in Gaza City are tirelessly recovering bodies from the rubble. Dozens of corpses, including entire families, have been found in the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood. The devastation is immense, with homes destroyed and lives lost due to artillery fire and aerial bombardment. Civil defense workers, undeterred by the grim conditions, continue their efforts.

Hospital director Fadel Naem of Al-Ahli Hospital reported that both the deceased and wounded have been brought in from Tel al-Hawa. The hospital resumed operations after evacuations earlier in the week due to the intense fighting. However, some homes remain inaccessible, and the bodies found are often decomposing or partially mauled by dogs.

The situation mirrors that of another Gaza City neighborhood, Shuja’iyyah, where additional bodies were discovered under similar circumstances. Despite evacuation orders, an estimated 300,000 Palestinians still remain in northern Gaza, facing hunger and cramped conditions in tent camps.

Meanwhile, in Cairo, mediators persistently work to bridge gaps between Israel and Hamas, seeking a proposal deal that includes a ceasefire and hostage release in Gaza. The urgency of these negotiations cannot be overstated, as lives hang in the balance amidst the ongoing conflict.
