Churchill Falls: A 15% Power Bill Rebate, $10 Billion From Ottawa — What It Means for Your Wallet

Thursday, August 20, 2026 Last Monday, Prime Minister Mark Carney stood on a pier in St. John's alongside Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Tony Wakeham and Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette to announce what Ottawa is calling the largest clean energy investment in North American history. Buried in the headline numbers — $273 billion in nominal contract value, $10 billion in federal financing, 14,000 megawatts of new hydro capacity — is a much simpler story for ordinary Canadians: who pays what for electricity, for the next 50 years. Israeli Forces Detain 100 Suspected Hamas Militants in Gaza Hospital Raid

In a significant military operation, Israeli troops captured around 100 suspected Hamas militants during a raid at Kamal Adwan hospital in northern Gaza, the military announced on Monday. The raid, which took place over the weekend, has been met with conflicting reports from Gaza health officials and Hamas, who deny any militant presence at the hospital.

The Israeli military stated that the operation was aimed at dismantling a Hamas stronghold within the hospital. “The soldiers apprehended approximately 100 terrorists from the compound, including those who attempted to escape during the evacuation of civilians,” a military spokesperson said. The troops reportedly found weapons, terror funds, and intelligence documents inside the hospital.

Gaza’s health ministry, however, has accused the Israeli forces of detaining dozens of male medical staff and causing significant damage to the hospital, which was already struggling due to ongoing raids in the area. Footage released by the health ministry showed extensive damage to several buildings, though this has not been independently verified.

The raid has intensified the already dire humanitarian situation in northern Gaza, where thousands of civilians are trapped amid ongoing military operations. The Israeli military has urged civilians to evacuate the area, but many have been unable to leave due to the continuous fighting.

This operation is part of a broader Israeli offensive aimed at rooting out Hamas militants following a series of deadly attacks. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with international calls for a ceasefire growing louder.
