Ontario Halts U.S. Electricity Surcharge Amid Trade Tensions

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced the suspension of a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to three U.S. states—Michigan, New York, and Minnesota—following a diplomatic overture from the White House. The surcharge, introduced just a day earlier, was Ontario's response to U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%. The decision to pause the surcharge came after U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick extended an "olive branch" by inviting Ford and Canadian Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc to Washington for discussions on trade. Ukraine Claims Russian ICBM Strike on Dnipro

In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian military officials have claimed that Russia launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) targeting the city of Dnipro. This marks the first reported use of such a missile in the war that began in February 2022.

According to Ukraine’s air force, the missile was launched from Russia’s Astrakhan region, which borders the Caspian Sea. The attack included a barrage of eight missiles, six of which were intercepted by Ukrainian defenses. The claim has not been independently verified, and a U.S. official suggested that the missile used was not an ICBM but a different type of ballistic missile

The strike comes amid heightened tensions following Ukraine’s recent use of U.S.-made ATACMS missiles against targets within Russia. The Kremlin has responded by updating its nuclear doctrine, lowering the threshold for a potential nuclear response.

The situation remains fluid, with international observers closely monitoring the developments for further escalation.
